April 18, 2017

Cum laude graduates celebrating their success.

The future of South Africa’s Accounting sector is much brighter thanks to the efforts of eight Bachelor of Commerce Accounting students who graduated cum laude from UKZN.

They are Ms Camira Govender, Ms Janelle Govender, Ms Pooja Jaguth, Mr Muhammad Kadwa, Ms Devina Karikan, Mr Archford Matemera, Mr Thabiso Mtshali and Ms Shanelle Singh.

‘My plan is to complete my Honours in Accounting this year, then do two Board exams and serve three years of articles at PricewaterhouseCoopers to qualify as a CA. My degree has provided me with the first stepping stone towards achieving this,’ said Camira.

For Jaguth, getting an opportunity to tutor and share her knowledge with students made her confident that she could handle any challenge on her journey towards becoming a CA.

‘I was unsure of what career path to follow but seeing my older brother excel at this course and also graduate cum laude was huge motivation. Chartered Accountants are found in almost all successful organisations, so this course will provide me with many opportunities and ensure that I enjoy a financially stable future,’ she said.

Hard work and an awareness of the excellent opportunities available for chartered accountants ensured Kadwa’s success.

‘It has always been my dream to become a Chartered Accountant. Before making my final decision, I consulted CAs I knew and they reassured me that this was definitely the route to go. Being a South African CA means that there are jobs available throughout the world and huge potential for promotion and growth in the work place. These are some of the factors that motivated me to choose this career,’ he said.

Singh said pursuing the BCom Accounting qualification had been an enlightening experience.

‘This has been an enjoyable journey that has exposed me to other areas of interest besides Accounting. I plan to eventually become a Chartered Accountant and work in the corporate world. This qualification is the first step towards achieving that goal,’ she said.

Karikan said studying towards this qualification has been challenging yet rewarding.

‘Throughout high school, I developed a flare and love for Mathematics and Accounting and that definitely became my biggest motivation towards pursuing a BCom Accounting qualification. My family and friends are tremendously proud of my achievements and I am so grateful for their continuous support. I am currently pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting with the hope of qualifying as a CA in the future,’ she said.
