College of Law and Management Studies

Deputy Vice-Chancellor’s COMMUNIQUÉ

Volume 1 | Issue 2

Prof-Brian-McArthur-2020

Professor Brian McArthur

Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Head (Acting)
College of Law and Management Studies

2020 has been a roller coaster year! It started on a high note with the College meeting its enrolment targets, as academics and new students eased into the new year – then the Coronavirus attacked people throughout the world, leaving health systems and economies in great distress.

When South Africa went into lockdown at the end of March, UKZN’s academic programme – the lifeblood of the University – was disrupted and so were the activities of our College.

The challenges tested our ability to adapt and innovate, with agility becoming critical for business survival. I am grateful to all the College academics and professional services teams for rising to the occasion – the College of Law and Management Studies’ team has a lot to be proud of in terms of achievements.

Working with various University structures, the College launched the remote multimodal teaching and learning solution in June, and a streamlined research portfolio adapting to the remote learning mode, while continuing to provide leadership and services to the research community. As always, the professional services sector remained the essential backbone for academic activities.

Responding to the crisis, our management scientists and legal experts reviewed their research areas and aligned them to address and debate some of the challenges through a series of thought leadership articles and short videos aimed at empowering the business community with the tools to navigate the unprecedented turbulent environments they were operating in.

While it was not possible to host traditional graduation ceremonies to celebrate academic excellence achieved by our students and staff, technology enabled us in May and October to virtually and publicly recognise and reward academic achievements. Congratulations to the Class of 2020!

It was pleasing to witness five academics in our College being awarded PhDs – Dr Maropeng Mpya and Dr Sheetal Soni of the School of Law; Dr Shaun Mowat and Dr Ayanda Meyiwa of the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance; and Dr Doug Engelbrecht of the School of Management, IT and Governance.

The final announcements of the promotion of academic staff were made recently, so please join me in congratulating all the academics listed below. The College looks forward to continued excellence at your higher academic level.

Dr Darren Subramanien and Dr Paul Swanepoel from the School of Law; Dr Christopher Chikandiwa and Dr Xoliswa Majola from the Graduate School of Business and Leadership; and Dr Bomi Nomlala from the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance were promoted to Senior Lecturers.

Professor Indira Padayachee and Professor Craig Blewett from the School of Management, IT and Governance; and Professor Gavin George from HEARD in the School of Accounting, Finance and Economics were promoted to Associate Professors.

Professor Fayth Ruffin from the School of Management, IT and Governance; Professor Harold Ngalawa and Professor Mabutho Sibanda from the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance were promoted to Full Professors. These full professorships represent the pinnacle of academic achievement and deserve special recognition.

The tradition of acknowledging staff for dedication and loyalty to the University during a Long Service Awards Ceremony will not be possible this year. However, I wish to express my sincere gratitude to 19 colleagues who qualify for the Long Service Award. May they continue to serve the University with excellence.

I also wish to thank and say farewell to all those leaving us at the end of this year through retirement.

To all members of the College, thank you for your tireless efforts and contributions to the academic enterprise throughout a challenging year; and to our students, all of the best in your end-of-year examinations.

We also pause to reflect with sadness on the staff members and students who passed away this year – our sincere condolences to their family and friends.

As we prepare for the year-end break, we need to remember that the pandemic is still with us and we must continue to observe COVID-19 health and safety protocols by always wearing a mask, washing or sanitizing our hands regularly and maintaining social distancing at all times.

As 2020 draws to a close, it is encouraging to remember the many achievements of College staff – a selection of excerpts and links from some of these have been presented after the list of Long Service Awardees below.

I wish each and every one of you a restful and peaceful festive season and know that we will all return to face the challenges of 2021 with the same dedication, innovation and professionalism as always!
