The COVID-19 pandemic has been described by the United Nations as a global health emergency which has crippled major economies across the globe. In accordance with the Disaster Management Act 57 of 2002, President Cyril Ramaphosa declared it as a national disaster which saw South Africa going into lockdown from 27 March 2020.
