Foundation Programme

Popularly known as the Extended Curriculum Programme, the three-year Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) General and the Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) Accounting degrees are extended over four years to cater for candidates who do not meet the entrance or the Mathematics requirement.

What Does The Programme Include?

The Foundation Programme is designed to equip you with the essential skills needed for success in your academic journey. Throughout the year, you will complete five key foundational modules:

  1. Academic Literacy in Commerce (first and second semesters)
  2. Foundational Microeconomics (first semester)
  3. Foundational Macroeconomics (second semester)
  4. Foundational Mathematics (first and second semesters)
  5. Service learning (second semester only).

These modules are tailored to help you build strong academic foundations. You’ll improve your English language skills to excel in learning through English, while developing crucial quantitative and analytical skills for economics, mathematics, and statistics.

Remember, successful completion of these modules is required to move on to the mainstream Bachelor of Commerce programme. If you don’t meet the requirements, you’ll still have the option to explore other programmes at the university that match your qualifications.

Who should apply for the Foundation Programme?

The Foundation Programme is a great opportunity if you’ve qualified for admission to the College based on your matric results but you need one point to meet the Mathematics or English requirements for programmes like BCom General or BCom Accounting.

If you meet the following criteria, you may apply for the Bachelor of Commerce Extended Curriculum in Accounting or General:

Bachelor of Commerce General (Extended Curriculum)

  • An NSC Bachelor’s degree pass
  • A minimum of 26 NSC points (excluding Life Orientation)
  • Level 4 in English, Level 4 in Life Orientation, and Level 3 in Mathematics.

Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting (Extended Curriculum)

  • An NSC Bachelor’s degree pass
  • A minimum of 28 NSC points (excluding Life Orientation)
  • Level 4 in English, Level 4 in Life Orientation, and Level 4 in Mathematics.

*Preference will be given to students from Quintiles 1-3 schools.

Note: Students who have previously attended the University or any other tertiary institution for a complete semester, whether in a degree or access program, will not be admitted to either the Bachelor of Commerce Extended Curriculum (General) or (Accounting).

Does the programme make a difference?

Our data shows that students who pass the Foundation Year generally do better than their mainstream counterparts.

Student success is at the core of our Foundation Programme, and the data collected over the years indicates that, overall, Foundation students outperform their mainstream counterparts.
