Research conducted by Colonel Phumelela Mthethwa from Durban Metropolitan Police uncovered that effective supervision plays a significant role in enhancing the performance of law enforcement officers.
His findings suggest that improving supervisory practices can substantially elevate police efficiency in combating crime, particularly in the Durban Metropolitan Police.
Mthethwa, who hails from Umlazi, earned his Master of Commerce in Management during UKZN’s Spring Graduation. His study titled, Factors Affecting the Effectiveness of Police Performance in the Durban Metropolitan Police in eThekwini, KwaZulu-Natal, delved into the internal challenges that prevent the city’s police force from operating at its full potential.
‘I was motivated by the desire to identify the internal factors that impede Durban Metropolitan Police from functioning optimally and effectively in order to suggest solutions and strategies that will help fight crime in our city,’ said Mthethwa.
Professor Msizi Mkhize, Associate Professor and Pro Vice-Chancellor for Student Services at UKZN who supervised Mthethwa’s research, highlighted another key finding: professional development opportunities for police officers have a notable impact on performance. ‘This implies that increasing professional development opportunities for police officers could enhance their performance.’
Mthethwa was also motivated to pursue master’s studies by the desire to improve his skills and competencies within the policing sector, challenging the perception that law enforcement employs individuals with limited education, resulting in inefficiency.
‘What keeps me going is the hope of finding solutions to the crime-related problems confronting our country,’ he said.
Looking ahead, Mthethwa plans to apply his research to improve supervision strategies within law enforcement. He hopes his qualification will open doors for career advancement, while also considering the possibility of venturing into business.
‘This qualification is a perfect fit for both interests in that it broadens my management acumen while introducing me to the world of commerce.’
