Ms Leanna Pillay’s journey to become an economist has been boosted by receiving the Denis Hurley Scholarship.
The scholarship – named after the late Archbishop Denis Hurley, a former UKZN Chancellor – affords academically deserving students to pursue their honours degrees.
Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Economics, Pillay said the financial relief provided by the scholarship will allow her to fully immerse herself in her studies, preparing for a career where she hopes to make a significant impact.
‘Being awarded the Denis Hurley Scholarship represents not only a validation of my hard work and dedication,’ she said, ‘It opens doors to opportunities that will allow me to further my education and professional development, laying a solid foundation for my future career.’
Raised in Durban, Pillay’s passion for economics stems from a deep fascination with how economic principles shape global markets and influence decision-making across industries.
‘To me, economics is not just an academic pursuit but a powerful lens through which I explore my deep passion for investments, market analysis, and exchange rates. It’s a dynamic tool that enables me to understand and engage with the complexities of financial markets and global economic trends.’
Pillay is particularly interested in areas where economic principles intersect with technology, politics, and global trade. She aims to delve into the complexities of financial markets and exchange rates, applying her knowledge to craft strategies that promote sustainable growth and enhance financial systems.
‘While also working as a JSE student investment mentor, I aspire to gain hands-on experience in economic analysis and market research. This will help me enhance my analytical skills and apply my theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios.’
Looking to the future, Pillay plans to continue her education by pursuing a Master’s in Economics.
‘This ongoing pursuit of knowledge will not only broaden my expertise but also enable me to contribute more effectively to complex economic issues.’
