Striving for excellence resulted in a cum laude pass for Bachelor of Commerce graduates Ms Demika Govender (Finance, Supply Chain Management), Ms Jodie Kondiah (Information Systems and Technology, Marketing), Ms Hannah Sancho (Information Systems and Technology, Supply Chain Management) and Mr Tasheel Sevpersad (Information Systems and Technology, Management).
Govender says that the realisation that the financial industry is extremely diverse combined with her fascination about technological advancements is what led her to pursue this qualification.
‘I want to work in finance because I enjoy how challenging and fast-paced the industry is. I thrive under pressure. I enjoy problem solving and data analysis, but I recognise that finance is about people, not just numbers. I enjoyed the course because learning about financial risk management, corporate financial management, capital market theory, and quantitative economics is very interesting.’
Govender was recognised as an honorary Golden Key member awarded to undergraduate students within the top 15% of the University making graduating cum laude the cherry on top.
‘It is considered a great achievement for me to be considered as the top 15% in the College of Law and Management Studies, considering the magnitude of the Institution. My family is extremely proud in all that I have achieved thus far, with latest being obtaining my degree cum laude as well as getting accepted to pursue my honours. My current goal is to get a job with a reputable company, and my long-term goal is to get a good position where I can advance my career while also helping the organisation,’ she said.
With aspirations of becoming an entrepreneur, Kondiah says she made the right choice by choosing a degree that has equipped her with a lot of knowledge and insight into the consumer market and business.
‘I chose to pursue BCOM general as I always enjoyed studying business at school. Furthermore, I am someone who wants to own their own business eventually and wanted to learn more about business. I chose to major in Marketing and Information Systems and Technology (ISTN) as I have a passion for marketing as well as I feel marketing and ISTN do go hand in hand. We live in a world where technology is changing all the time and where there e is always an advancement in the way we can do things.’
Sancho, who is currently pursuing an honours’ degree in Supply Chain Management believes that this qualification is a first step towards a successful career in the field.
‘This qualification will enable me to take on more senior roles in the industry and make valuable contributions to any organisation I work at. In the long term, I aim to continue learning and growing in my field and stay up to date with the latest advancements in technology and business practices.
I am confident that my combination of qualifications, skills, and mindset make me a standout candidate for any organisation in the information systems technology and supply chain management fields.’
Sevpersad who is fascinated by technology and its ability to impact our daily lives, said this qualification allowed him to explore how various devices work together to achieve big results.
‘I’m excited about my future in the technology field and plan to keep up with all the latest developments and advancements. I’m passionate about community projects that support safety, entrepreneurship, and upliftment, and I believe that my IS&T qualification will help me achieve my goals of helping businesses grow and become successful. It could even lead me to start my own business one day! Additionally, I believe this qualification will continue to support my goals of helping disadvantaged people be innovative and seize opportunities to make a better life for themselves.’
