Mr Shalin Govender has graduated with a Master of Commerce in Supply Chain Management cum laude.
His dissertation, titled: ‘Building Resilient Supply Chains through Artificial Intelligence’ supervised by Professor Micheline Naudé, explored the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in enhancing supply chain resilience.
Govender’s academic journey was fuelled by a long-standing fascination with how products move from raw materials to end consumers. His passion for supply chain management deepened during his undergraduate and honours studies, eventually leading him to pursue his master’s degree while balancing full-time employment.
His research focused on how AI technologies can be used to improve forecasting, streamline operations, and support agile decision-making in times of disruption. Govender discovered that although AI adoption in supply chains is still at an early stage, it holds significant potential to improve visibility, responsiveness, and risk management.
“What kept me passionate about this topic was knowing that supply chains are the backbone of every business. AI has the potential to transform them into systems that are not only efficient but also adaptive and future-ready,” he said.
Despite facing challenges such as limited access to confidential data and translating complex technical concepts into practical, industry-relevant insights, Govender remained focused and determined. He believes his work contributes not only to academic knowledge but also to society by helping organisations ensure that essential goods and services continue to reach communities in times of crisis.
Achieving his degree cum laude required significant personal sacrifice. Govender often worked into the early hours of the morning, used public holidays for research, and continued writing even during family outings. “I believe discipline is more important than motivation. Consistency is what drives success. It was tough, but nothing worthwhile comes easy,” he said.
Govender is a firm believer in the principle of ‘hard work beats talent’.
Outside of his academic and professional life, he is an avid runner and gym enthusiast, frequently participating in 10km races with the aim of improving his personal best of 47 minutes.
Family support played a key role in his journey. “My family is incredibly proud of what I’ve accomplished, their encouragement has been my strength throughout this process,” he said.
Looking ahead, Govender is eager to contribute to the evolving field of supply chain management, particularly in the areas of innovation, sustainability, and resilience. He believes that his qualification has equipped him with the strategic insight and advanced problem-solving skills needed to address the complex challenges facing modern supply chains.
