Chartered Accountant and Acting Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) Mr Dumisani Maluleke aims to use his newly acquired qualification to address the urgent challenges posed by climate change, especially carbon emissions.
‘The study focused on selected public sector departments, entities, and metropolitan areas. My role, which entails reporting and funding working in a cross functional team with engineering links to climate change. For example, when roads are washed away, this affects our budgets which then requires a change in roads designs to accommodate climate change,’ explained Maluleke.
The study titled, The Transparency of Carbon Emissions Disclosure within the South African Public Sector was supervised by the Dean and Head of the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance Professor Mabutho Sibanda. It delves into strategies and the integration of climate considerations in this sector’s operations, and orientation towards carbon emissions.
‘The findings from the annual and sustainability reports will enhance reporting on carbon emissions in public sector entities. I plan to share my recommendations using a checklist I developed that can assist in reporting on carbon emissions. For example, metros have Councils, departments have Member of the Executive Councils (MECs), and entities have Boards, therefore issues to do with strategy and orientation will naturally be the concern of these Councils, MECs and Boards. So, any strategic items on the checklist were designed and directed at appropriate levels,’ he elaborated.
Maluleke added that he was motivated by a desire to set an example for his 17-year-old daughter, Ms Malwandla Maluleke ‘I hope to encourage her to pursue Higher Education relentlessly. I have a master’s degree, but I want her to go further, to attain a PhD.’

His rigorous approach and insightful analysis highlight his capability to tackle complex issues and provide actionable recommendations,’ commented Sibanda.
