Professor Vannie Naidoo of the School of Management, Information Technology and Governance has been selected as a representative to serve on the technical team of the World Entrepreneurship Forum – Universities Initiative for Entrepreneurs and Investment (WEIF/AUIEI)-East Africa Region.
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization organises the World Entrepreneurship Forum every three years, this year it was held in Dubai. This forum promotes and highlights the role of impactful investment and innovation towards economic development and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
The technical team develops strategies and insights for African universities to grow entrepreneurship and investment.
Naidoo believes that entrepreneurship, if developed accordingly within the curriculum of African universities, can stimulate entrepreneurship and become the lifeblood of the African continent. She said universities in Africa can grow entrepreneurship through proper policy formulation on entrepreneurial education.
‘Another important role for African universities is to develop entrepreneurial hubs where entrepreneurs can showcase their innovations,’ said Naidoo. ‘Governments, which also have a major role to play in supporting funding of such entrepreneurial initiatives, need to partner with universities to help grow entrepreneurs within the African continent. The economies of Africa require a major reset – innovation in entrepreneurship in green industries and agriculture can assist in kick-starting this.’
