As the first step towards mutually beneficial collaboration, UKZN’s School of Law has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Department of Employment and Labour (DEL).
The agreement offers Law students an opportunity to participate in inspections and enforcements actioned by the DEL and also creates opportunities for academics and students to be part of advocacy projects, programmes, seminars, and webinars, among other events.
Said UKZN Law academic Ms Samukelisiwe Jali: ‘I was approached by the Director: Advocacy and Stakeholder Relations Inspections and Enforcement Services Branch (HQ), Dr Pravine Naidoo, to present on the current state of the South African Labour Market at the annual Labour Law Indaba held in Durban in May. Following my presentation in which the focus was on parental rights, Dr Naidoo and DEL representatives approached me to facilitate the collaboration resulting in this MOU which will be of great benefit to the UKZN community.’
Naidoo said the high-impact societal and stakeholder community engagement collaboration would have a positive impact on the future of South Africa’s labour law enforcement and education. ‘The partnership can jointly ensure that SA labour laws are mainstreamed into the national consciousness of the South African population, ultimately ensuring that transformation and social justice become a living reality for both employers and employees in the South African economy.’
