Ms Zamela Malinga had her heart set on becoming a politician but then ‘fell in love’ with law and is now an admitted attorney, a notary public and a conveyancer running her own firm.
‘I always thought I would find myself in politics because I am so vocal, passionate about justice and always willing to help other people make their voice heard,’ said Malinga. ‘I registered for Political Science, Philosophy and Legal Studies but ended up transferring to a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) because I fell in love with the Idea of being a lawyer and helping people get their “day in court”. UKZN helped me fuel my passion and nurtured my dream which I am living now at the young age of 25.’
She says apart from shaping her academic and career aspirations, UKZN also provided an environment for her to discover her independence and full potential.
‘My parents died when I was in primary school so I had to rely on relatives and friends for support. I learned to take care of myself and make informed decisions which helped me to become the successful woman I am today. Colleagues and friends of mine are also now successful prosecutors, magistrates, commissioners, lawyers, conveyancers, engineers, doctors, businessmen and businesswomen.
‘The late nights and early mornings at the Law Library contributed hugely to my success,’ said Malinga.
The proud alumnus, who is a firm believer in diversity and lifelong learning, is pursuing a postgraduate qualification. ‘I love UKZN so much I decided to go back and am currently studying towards a Postgraduate Diploma in Industrial Relations.’
